A user really gets confused, puzzled and ambivalent while choosing a web-hosting plan. As soon as one’s web site gets designed, he/she starts searching the suitable web host. This is the beginning of the most challenging work as a user may face many difficulties, while choosing the most suitable hosting firm. Since there are different prices that are set by different web hosting provider, selection becomes difficult for the user. Well, the top most demand of the users is to get an ideal web host. However for most of them it seems to be difficult, as they even don’t know the definition of an ideal web hosting. Different people have different view as well as different requirements, so it’s impossible to describe about an ideal web hosting as per everyone’s opinion.

An ideal web hosting is different for different people. A reliable web hosting provider use to host one’s web site as well as make it sure that it is accessible by everyone, 24 hours a day. It is very crucial for one to select a reliable web hosting, if his/her website plays the role of an important means of communication for him/her to reach his/her users. Following are some tips, for the one who wants to select the web-hosting provider.

The types of web hosting providers and expectations from them

1. Free web hosting:

Free web hosting is the web hosting that used to provide services without charging any cost. Users cannot afford to expect a lot from free hosts. If a user desires for a professional looking website to get it run on the Internet, then he/she should not go for free hosting. A free host is not able to provide all the features and support one requires.

2. Paid web hosting:

A professional user who wants to run his/her web site successfully should always go for paid web hosting. Paid hosting provider definitely use to provide reliable services. A user gets all the required features if he/she chooses paid web host.

The criterion to choose best web hosting provider:

1. Support

Support is the foremost factor, as on the basis of it a user selects his/her web hosting service. A user not only requires support whereas the professional technical support as well. It is advisable to select the company that guarantees to provide 24×7x365 support. A user can get across with the problem at any time and only round the clock support can help him/her. One can check the speed of the response of a particular company by sending them email. No matters, whether it is a technical question or question to their customer service department.

2. Price

No one wants to take any kind of risk with his/her money. Every one thinks twice before making any investment in any company. People use to compare the prices from one company to another, so as to make ideal decision; one should choose the company providing services at most reasonable rates. A user should not forget that cheaper provider means poor services. One can do some surveys or join forums to ask for other people’s opinion on the particular company’s review. This is sure that a user has to decide and take some risks in order to get a right company.

3. Money Back Guarantee

This is not sure that the hosting company one chooses will definitely provide reliable services, so user should choose the company that has money back guarantee policy. The most common one is 30-days money back guarantee. Very few companies offer 60-days money back guarantee. So, the company one selects should provide this guarantee. A user need not to worry rather should start venturing into the web world.

4. Platforms and Applications Available

As per the technical aspect it means that there are different types of platforms available. Nowadays, in the market the web hosting companies use to offer Linux or Windows platform in their server. If a user’s website is based on ASP technology, then he/she should definitely go for Windows platform. User should also check on the features offered to him/her that whether the features are supported by his/her website back-end technology or not. If all these informations are not confirmed to the user then he/she should ask with them. One can email them to ask his/her queries.

5. Scalability, Reliability and Security

Scalability and reliability of web hosting is measured through the services it provides. A web hosting firm is said to be reliable if it proper connections and maximum uptime. The web hosting company one chooses should be secured in terms of virus and SPAM filtering. All these factors are responsible for running a web site successfully. In case provider allows simple and easy upgrade for any hosting plans, it is really appreciable. There are some providers providing customisation for user. Thus it all depends on one’s decision solely, but one should remember to choose provider that allows modifications in form of easy addition to bandwidth, web space or email accounts as one’s traffic grows.

One should also check the reliability of the web hosting company. It is must to find out the uptime guarantee as well as asking the location of their server as well as their backbone connection. One can use emails to verify about above details. An additional feature of a reliable web host is that they provide the content on their website for users to access. Thus in case user is not provided live chat, on should ask for that immediately. Uptime guarantee is also a factor which needs proper attention as it can only ensure website accessibility of one’s site at any point of time.

Another important factor is security. User should check in advance this feature and should choose provider that has stated clearly on their policy that they have SPAM and virus filtering feature already installed. Thus it is must else user will be big trouble afterwards due to SPAMS and viruses.

Thus one is ready to go for selecting a proper host company. Best of luck!!

Web Developer with Database skills needed?
I am developing a website, and need the folllowing features:

Visitors sign up with their email address and create their own alias and password.
Log into the site with those credentials
Users can change passwords whenever they want to
Submit information to a database (i.e. post your review of establishments like a restaurant)
Search that same data base for others’ reviews
Display the database search results.

I can be much more specific, but in general, that is what I need.

I am not looking for someone to design my site or create the pages. I can handle tha work myself. But, I really don’t have any talent with web database coding. I just need someone to do the coding specific to what I mentioned above, and advise me on what I need from the back end Hosting (i.e. MySql, etc..)

I do not gurantee anyone the work. But I need this done asap. So if you are interested, or can recommend anyone, just reply to this question with your contact info or send me a message.

Ten years ago, having a computer with 4 GB of hard drive was a state of the art. Nobody could ever imagine that we could run around with a 4 GB key ring size USB drive. That is how much technology has advanced. The fact too applies to emails and web hostings.

Undeniably true that people are still using hotmail, gmail, yahoo mail and other free web based email accounts. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. They are great and most importantly they are free. I myself too use hotmail gmail as well as yahoo. However, when it comes to presenting your business, especially when you are just starting out, it would give a good impressions if you have yourname@yourcompanyname.com on your business cards. In business world, people tends take you more seriously as they are aware you are taking your business seriously too.

This is where web hosting provider comes in handy. Sure they used to cost thousand of dollars and many small and home based type business owners could not afford it, but as I mention earlier web hosting is changing. It is much more affordable with much functionality offered to subscribers. Some web hosting companies, it will only cost you $9.95 / month to have your site hosted. That is equivalent to having chicken sandwiches these days.

Now, people would claim “Why would I pay money, where I can get free email?” Sure, but if you would like to look more professional in your small business than you must have it. You would also think that, “Well maybe I should wait till I design my own website so I don’t waste any subscription time” Well, you are somehow right. You might be wasting your subscription time, however once your subscription is activated you can start using your email accounts at that very moments. That being said, you can start distributing your new email to your contacts and potential clients. Impress them by that moment! Of course, you do not want to wait too long while you are getting someone to design your sites, which lead us to the last point.

Good hosting companies, they usually offer subscribers free applications in the subscription. These applications are open source based, meaning you can use it anyway you like it as long as you keep the copyright intact within the original source codes. The beauty of these free applications, it only takes minutes to install. Once installed, you can start configuring your sites through admin panel. No HTML knowledge is required. I have one template that I just installed before I wrote this article. WordPress, a web based application that is intended for writing blog purposes. You can have a demo at http://testarea.lukasweb.net/wordpress/ . I installed it for demonstration purposes, so I have not configured it as a working site. Wordpress is just one of many open source application that you would get. If you are selling online, then you can utilize OS-Commerce, one of the most popular open source e-commerce applications complete with shopping cart. There you go, last problem solved. You are now basically ready to do showcase your new email, and level up your business image.

So, let us summarize. The advantage of having your own web hosting:

More professional look as you can have yourname@yourbusiness.com

You get free templates and applications so that you can start building your sites with no HTML knowledge required

The best thing is that it only cost you $9.95/month, which equal to buying a pair of decent shoes every year!

For more details on choosing the right web hosting company, I have picked several affordable web hosting providers for you to choose in my product review sites.

Give your opinion on a website I’d like to create.. Yay or nay?
I want to make a website for fun. I already registered the domain name and want to play around a little bit. I’d like to make a website regarding restaurants in my area of the state, maybe 5 or 6 towns that border each other.

What I’d like to do is review each restaurant in detail (describing host, atmosphere, service food portions etc.). a whole review of our entire dining experience there.

On each restaurants page, I’d like to include a link to the restaurants website, menu, comment on portion size, put info about coupons (whether they are on the website, get emailed to you if you sign up, get them in the sunday paper etc..,), where or not you get a free preappetizer like bread etc etc… . Also maybe add links to other review sites (yelp, zagats).

On each page, I can have people comment on the restaurants if they’ve been there, maybe have visitors submit whole reviews and we can feature them as guest reviewers.. just a fun local site. These aren’t tiny towns, but they aren’t big towns either, maybe 30-50 restaurants per town?

While it would be for fun, if it got enough traffic maybe i would add sponsor ads and see if i can make enough to cover part of the hosting price.

Basically it would be a local site that, in my opinion, would be a little more personalized than yelp, we8there etc…

What do you think? Any ideas?

Do you belong to the "new Church of Global Warming"?
"Aliens Cause Global Warming"

A lecture by Michael Crichton
California Institute of Technology
Pasadena, CA
January 17, 2003

My topic today sounds humorous but unfortunately I am serious. I am going to argue that extraterrestrials lie behind global warming. Or to speak more precisely, I will argue that a belief in extraterrestrials has paved the way, in a progression of steps, to a belief in global warming. Charting this progression of belief will be my task today.

Let me say at once that I have no desire to discourage anyone from believing in either extraterrestrials or global warming. That would be quite impossible to do. Rather, I want to discuss the history of several widely-publicized beliefs and to point to what I consider an emerging crisis in the whole enterprise of science-namely the increasingly uneasy relationship between hard science and public policy.

I have a special interest in this because of my own upbringing. I was born in the midst of World War II, and passed my formative years at the height of the Cold War. In school drills, I dutifully crawled under my desk in preparation for a nuclear attack.

It was a time of widespread fear and uncertainty, but even as a child I believed that science represented the best and greatest hope for mankind. Even to a child, the contrast was clear between the world of politics-a world of hate and danger, of irrational beliefs and fears, of mass manipulation and disgraceful blots on human history. In contrast, science held different values-international in scope, forging friendships and working relationships across national boundaries and political systems, encouraging a dispassionate habit of thought, and ultimately leading to fresh knowledge and technology that would benefit all mankind. The world might not be avery good place, but science would make it better. And it did. In my lifetime, science has largely fulfilled its promise. Science has been the great intellectual adventure of our age, and a great hope for our troubled and restless world.

But I did not expect science merely to extend lifespan, feed the hungry, cure disease, and shrink the world with jets and cell phones. I also expected science to banish the evils of human thought—prejudice and superstition, irrational beliefs and false fears. I expected science to be, in Carl Sagan's memorable phrase, "a candle in a demon haunted world." And here, I am not so pleased with the impact of science. Rather than serving as a cleansing force, science has in some instances been seduced by the more ancient lures of politics and publicity. Some of the demons that haunt our world in recent years are invented by scientists. The world has not benefited from permitting these demons to escape free.

But let's look at how it came to pass.

Cast your minds back to 1960. John F. Kennedy is president, commercial jet airplanes are just appearing, the biggest university mainframes have 12K of memory. And in Green Bank, West Virginia at the new National Radio Astronomy Observatory, a young astrophysicist named Frank Drake runs a two week project called Ozma, to search for extraterrestrial signals. A signal is received, to great excitement. It turns out to be false, but the excitement remains. In 1960, Drake organizes the first SETI conference, and came up with the now-famous Drake equation:

N=N*fp ne fl fi fc fL

Where N is the number of stars in the Milky Way galaxy; fp is the fraction with planets; ne is the number of planets per star capable of supporting life; fl is the fraction of planets where life evolves; fi is the fraction where intelligent life evolves; and fc is the fraction that communicates; and fL is the fraction of the planet's life during which the communicating civilizations live.

This serious-looking equation gave SETI an serious footing as a legitimate intellectual inquiry. The problem, of course, is that none of the terms can be known, and most cannot even be estimated. The only way to work the equation is to fill in with guesses. And guesses-just so we're clear-are merely expressions of prejudice. Nor can there be "informed guesses." If you need to state how many planets with life choose to communicate, there is simply no way to make an informed guess. It's simply prejudice.

As a result, the Drake equation can have any value from "billions and billions" to zero. An expression that can mean anything means nothing. Speaking precisely, the Drake equation is literally meaningless, and has nothing to do with science. I take the hard view that science involves the creation of testable hypotheses. The Drake equation cannot be tested and therefore SETI is not science. SETI is unquestionably a religion. Faith is defined as the firm belief in something for which there is no proof. The belief that the Koran is the word of God is a matter of faith. The belief that God created the universe in seven days is a matter of faith. The belief that there are other life forms in the universe is a matter of faith. There is not a single shred of evidence for any other life forms, and in forty years of searching, none has been discovered. There is absolutely no evidentiary reason to maintain this belief. SETI is a religion.

One way to chart the cooling of enthusiasm is to review popular works on the subject. In 1964, at the height of SETI enthusiasm, Walter Sullivan of the NY Times wrote an exciting book about life in the universe entitled WE ARE NOT ALONE. By 1995, when Paul Davis wrote a book on the same subject, he titled it ARE WE ALONE? ( Since 1981, there have in fact been four books titled ARE WE ALONE.) More recently we have seen the rise of the so-called "Rare Earth" theory which suggests that we may, in fact, be all alone. Again, there is no evidence either way.

Back in the sixties, SETI had its critics, although not among astrophysicists and astronomers. The biologists and paleontologists were harshest. George Gaylord Simpson of Harvard sneered that SETI was a "study without a subject," and it remains so to the present day.

But scientists in general have been indulgent toward SETI, viewing it either with bemused tolerance, or with indifference. After all, what's the big deal? It's kind of fun. If people want to look, let them. Only a curmudgeon would speak harshly of SETI. It wasn't worth the bother.

And of course it is true that untestable theories may have heuristic value. Of course extraterrestrials are a good way to teach science to kids. But that does not relieve us of the obligation to see the Drake equation clearly for what it is-pure speculation in quasi-scientific trappings.

The fact that the Drake equation was not greeted with screams of outrage-similar to the screams of outrage that greet each Creationist new claim, for example-meant that now there was a crack in the door, a loosening of the definition of what constituted legitimate scientific procedure. And soon enough, pernicious garbage began to squeeze through the cracks.

Now let's jump ahead a decade to the 1970s, and Nuclear Winter.

In 1975, the National Academy of Sciences reported on "Long-Term Worldwide Effects of Multiple Nuclear Weapons Detonations" but the report estimated the effect of dust from nuclear blasts to be relatively minor. In 1979, the Office of Technology Assessment issued a report on "The Effects of Nuclear War" and stated that nuclear war could perhaps produce irreversible adverse consequences on the environment. However, because the scientific processes involved were poorly understood, the report stated it was not possible to estimate the probable magnitude of such damage.

Three years later, in 1982, the Swedish Academy of Sciences commissioned a report entitled "The Atmosphere after a Nuclear War: Twilight at Noon," which attempted to quantify the effect of smoke from burning forests and cities. The authors speculated that there would be so much smoke that a large cloud over the northern hemisphere would reduce incoming sunlight below the level required for photosynthesis, and that this would last for weeks or even longer.

The following year, five scientists including Richard Turco and Carl Sagan published a paper in Science called "Nuclear Winter: Global Consequences of Multiple Nuclear Explosions." This was the so-called TTAPS report, which attempted to quantify more rigorously the atmospheric effects, with the added credibility to be gained from an actual computer model of climate.

At the heart of the TTAPS undertaking was another equation, never specifically expressed, but one that could be paraphrased as follows:

Ds = Wn Ws Wh Tf Tb Pt Pr Pe… etc

(The amount of tropospheric dust=# warheads x size warheads x warhead detonation height x flammability of targets x Target burn duration x Particles entering the Troposphere x Particle reflectivity x Particle endurance…and so on.)

The similarity to the Drake equation is striking. As with the Drake equation, none of the variables can be determined. None at all. The TTAPS study addressed this problem in part by mapping out different wartime scenarios and assigning numbers to some of the variables, but even so, the remaining variables were-and are-simply unknowable. Nobody knows how much smoke will be generated when cities burn, creating particles of what kind, and for how long. No one knows the effect of local weather conditions on the amount of particles that will be injected into the troposphere. No one knows how long the particles will remain in the troposphere. And so on.

And remember, this is only four years after the OTA study concluded that the underlying scientific processes were so poorly known that no estimates could be reliably made. Nevertheless, the TTAPS study not only made those estimates, but concluded they were catastrophic.

According to Sagan and his coworkers, even a limited 5,000 megaton nuclear exchange would cause a global temperature drop of more than 35 degrees Centigrade, and this change would last for three months. The greatest volcanic eruptions that we know of changed world temperatures somewhere between .5 and 2 degrees Centigrade. Ice ages changed global temperatures by 10 degrees. Here we have an estimated change three times greater than any ice age. One might expect it to be the subject of some dispute.

But Sagan and his coworkers were prepared, for nuclear winter was from the outset the subject of a well-orchestrated media campaign. The first announcement of nuclear winter appeared in an article by Sagan in the Sunday supplement, Parade. The very next day, a highly-publicized, high-profile conference on the long-term consequences of nuclear war was held in Washington, chaired by Carl Sagan and Paul Ehrlich, the most famous and media-savvy scientists of their generation. Sagan appeared on the Johnny Carson show 40 times. Ehrlich was on 25 times. Following the conference, there were press conferences, meetings with congressmen, and so on. The formal papers in Science came months later.

This is not the way science is done, it is the way products are sold.

The real nature of the conference is indicated by these artists' renderings of the the effect of nuclear winter.

I cannot help but quote the caption for figure 5: "Shown here is a tranquil scene in the north woods. A beaver has just completed its dam, two black bears forage for food, a swallow-tailed butterfly flutters in the foreground, a loon swims quietly by, and a kingfisher searches for a tasty fish." Hard science if ever there was.

At the conference in Washington, during the question period, Ehrlich was reminded that after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, scientists were quoted as saying nothing would grow there for 75 years, but in fact melons were growing the next year. So, he was asked, how accurate were these findings now?

Ehrlich answered by saying "I think they are extremely robust. Scientists may have made statements like that, although I cannot imagine what their basis would have been, even with the state of science at that time, but scientists are always making absurd statements, individually, in various places. What we are doing here, however, is presenting a consensus of a very large group of scientists…"

I want to pause here and talk about this notion of consensus, and the rise of what has been called consensus science. I regard consensus science as an extremely pernicious development that ought to be stopped cold in its tracks. Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled. Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your wallet, because you're being had.

Let's be clear: the work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world. In science consensus is irrelevant. What is relevant is reproducible results. The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus.

There is no such thing as consensus science. If it's consensus, it isn't science. If it's science, it isn't consensus. Period.

In addition, let me remind you that the track record of the consensus is nothing to be proud of. Let's review a few cases.

In past centuries, the greatest killer of women was fever following childbirth . One woman in six died of this fever. In 1795, Alexander Gordon of Aberdeen suggested that the fevers were infectious processes, and he was able to cure them. The consensus said no. In 1843, Oliver Wendell Holmes claimed puerperal fever was contagious, and presented compellng evidence. The consensus said no. In 1849, Semmelweiss demonstrated that sanitary techniques virtually eliminated puerperal fever in hospitals under his management. The consensus said he was a Jew, ignored him, and dismissed him from his post. There was in fact no agreement on puerperal fever until the start of the twentieth century. Thus the consensus took one hundred and twenty five years to arrive at the right conclusion despite the efforts of the prominent "skeptics" around the world, skeptics who were demeaned and ignored. And despite the constant ongoing deaths of women.

There is no shortage of other examples. In the 1920s in America, tens of thousands of people, mostly poor, were dying of a disease called pellagra. The consensus of scientists said it was infectious, and what was necessary was to find the "pellagra germ." The US government asked a brilliant young investigator, Dr. Joseph Goldberger, to find the cause. Goldberger concluded that diet was the crucial factor. The consensus remained wedded to the germ theory. Goldberger demonstrated that he could induce the disease through diet. He demonstrated that the disease was not infectious by injecting the blood of a pellagra patient into himself, and his assistant. They and other volunteers swabbed their noses with swabs from pellagra patients, and swallowed capsules containing scabs from pellagra rashes in what were called "Goldberger's filth parties." Nobody contracted pellagra. The consensus continued to disagree with him. There was, in addition, a social factor-southern States disliked the idea of poor diet as the cause, because it meant that social reform was required. They continued to deny it until the 1920s. Result-despite a twentieth century epidemic, the consensus took years to see the light.

Probably every schoolchild notices that South America and Africa seem to fit together rather snugly, and Alfred Wegener proposed, in 1912, that the continents had in fact drifted apart. The consensus sneered at continental drift for fifty years. The theory was most vigorously denied by the great names of geology-until 1961, when it began to seem as if the sea floors were spreading. The result: it took the consensus fifty years to acknowledge what any schoolchild sees.

And shall we go on? The examples can be multiplied endlessly. Jenner and smallpox, Pasteur and germ theory. Saccharine, margarine, repressed memory, fiber and colon cancer, hormone replacement therap6y…the list of consensus errors goes on and on.

Finally, I would remind you to notice where the claim of consensus is invoked. Consensus is invoked only in situations where the science is not solid enough. Nobody says the consensus of scientists agrees that E=mc2. Nobody says the consensus is that the sun is 93 million miles away. It would never occur to anyone to speak that way.

But back to our main subject.

What I have been suggesting to you is that nuclear winter was a meaningless formula, tricked out with bad science, for policy ends. It was political from the beginning, promoted in a well-orchestrated media campaign that had to be planned weeks or months in advance.

Further evidence of the political nature of the whole project can be found in the response to criticism. Although Richard Feynman was characteristically blunt, saying, "I really don't think these guys know what they're talking about," other prominent scientists were noticeably reticent. Freeman Dyson was quoted as saying "It's an absolutely atrocious piece of science but…who wants to be accused of being in favor of nuclear war?" And Victor Weisskopf said, "The science is terrible but—perhaps the psychology is good." The nuclear winter team followed up the publication of such comments with letters to the editors denying that these statements were ever made, though the scientists since then have subsequently confirmed their views.

At the time, there was a concerted desire on the part of lots of people to avoid nuclear war. If nuclear winter looked awful, why investigate too closely? Who wanted to disagree? Only people like Edward Teller, the "father of the H bomb."

Teller said, "While it is generally recognized that details are still uncertain and deserve much more study, Dr. Sagan nevertheless has taken the position that the whole scenario is so robust that there can be little doubt about its main conclusions." Yet for most people, the fact that nuclear winter was a scenario riddled with uncertainties did not seem to be relevant.

I say it is hugely relevant. Once you abandon strict adherence to what science tells us, once you start arranging the truth in a press conference, then anything is possible. In one context, maybe you will get some mobilization against nuclear war. But in another context, you get Lysenkoism. In another, you get Nazi euthanasia. The danger is always there, if you subvert science to political ends.

That is why it is so important for the future of science that the line between what science can say with certainty, and what it cannot, be drawn clearly-and defended.

What happened to Nuclear Winter? As the media glare faded, its robust scenario appeared less persuasive; John Maddox, editor of Nature, repeatedly criticized its claims; within a year, Stephen Schneider, one of the leading figures in the climate model, began to speak of "nuclear autumn." It just didn't have the same ring.

A final media embarrassment came in 1991, when Carl Sagan predicted on Nightline that Kuwaiti oil fires would produce a nuclear winter effect, causing a "year without a summer," and endangering crops around the world. Sagan stressed this outcome was so likely that "it should affect the war plans." None of it happened.

What, then, can we say were the lessons of Nuclear Winter? I believe the lesson was that with a catchy name, a strong policy position and an aggressive media campaign, nobody will dare to criticize the science, and in short order, a terminally weak thesis will be established as fact. After that, any criticism becomes beside the point. The war is already over without a shot being fired. That was the lesson, and we had a textbook application soon afterward, with second hand smoke.

In 1993, the EPA announced that second-hand smoke was "responsible for approximately 3,000 lung cancer deaths each year in nonsmoking adults," and that it " impairs the respiratory health of hundreds of thousands of people." In a 1994 pamphlet the EPA said that the eleven studies it based its decision on were not by themselves conclusive, and that they collectively assigned second-hand smoke a risk factor of 1.19. (For reference, a risk factor below 3.0 is too small for action by the EPA. or for publication in the New England Journal of Medicine, for example.) Furthermore, since there was no statistical association at the 95% confidence limits, the EPA lowered the limit to 90%. They then classified second hand smoke as a Group A Carcinogen.

This was openly fraudulent science, but it formed the basis for bans on smoking in restaurants, offices, and airports. California banned public smoking in 1995. Soon, no claim was too extreme. By 1998, the Christian Science Monitor was saying that "Second-hand smoke is the nation's third-leading preventable cause of death." The American Cancer Society announced that 53,000 people died each year of second-hand smoke. The evidence for this claim is nonexistent.

In 1998, a Federal judge held that the EPA had acted improperly, had "committed to a conclusion before research had begun", and had "disregarded information and made findings on selective information." The reaction of Carol Browner, head of the EPA was: "We stand by our science….there's wide agreement. The American people certainly recognize that exposure to second hand smoke brings…a whole host of health problems." Again, note how the claim of consensus trumps science. In this case, it isn't even a consensus of scientists that Browner evokes! It's the consensus of the American people.

Meanwhile, ever-larger studies failed to confirm any association. A large, seven-country WHO study in 1998 found no association. Nor have well-controlled subsequent studies, to my knowledge. Yet we now read, for example, that second hand smoke is a cause of breast cancer. At this point you can say pretty much anything you want about second-hand smoke.

As with nuclear winter, bad science is used to promote what most people would consider good policy. I certainly think it is. I don't want people smoking around me. So who will speak out against banning second-hand smoke? Nobody, and if you do, you'll be branded a shill of RJ Reynolds. A big tobacco flunky. But the truth is that we now have a social policy supported by the grossest of superstitions. And we've given the EPA a bad lesson in how to behave in the future. We've told them that cheating is the way to succeed.

As the twentieth century drew to a close, the connection between hard scientific fact and public policy became increasingly elastic. In part this was possible because of the complacency of the scientific profession; in part because of the lack of good science education among the public; in part, because of the rise of specialized advocacy groups which have been enormously effective in getting publicity and shaping policy; and in great part because of the decline of the media as an independent assessor of fact. The deterioration of the American media is dire loss for our country. When distinguished institutions like the New York Times can no longer differentiate between factual content and editorial opinion, but rather mix both freely on their front page, then who will hold anyone to a higher standard?

And so, in this elastic anything-goes world where science-or non-science-is the hand maiden of questionable public policy, we arrive at last at global warming. It is not my purpose here to rehash the details of this most magnificent of the demons haunting the world. I would just remind you of the now-familiar pattern by which these things are established. Evidentiary uncertainties are glossed over in the unseemly rush for an overarching policy, and for grants to support the policy by delivering findings that are desired by the patron. Next, the isolation of those scientists who won't get with the program, and the characterization of those scientists as outsiders and "skeptics" in quotation marks-suspect individuals with suspect motives, industry flunkies, reactionaries, or simply anti-environmental nutcases. In short order, debate ends, even though prominent scientists are uncomfortable about how things are being done.

When did "skeptic" become a dirty word in science? When did a skeptic require quotation marks around it?

To an outsider, the most significant innovation in the global warming controversy is the overt reliance that is being placed on models. Back in the days of nuclear winter, computer models were invoked to add weight to a conclusion: "These results are derived with the help of a computer model." But now large-scale computer models are seen as generating data in themselves. No longer are models judged by how well they reproduce data from the real world-increasingly, models provide the data. As if they were themselves a reality. And indeed they are, when we are projecting forward. There can be no observational data about the year 2100. There are only model runs.

This fascination with computer models is something I understand very well. Richard Feynmann called it a disease. I fear he is right. Because only if you spend a lot of time looking at a computer screen can you arrive at the complex point where the global warming debate now stands.

Nobody believes a weather prediction twelve hours ahead. Now we're asked to believe a prediction that goes out 100 years into the future? And make financial investments based on that prediction? Has everybody lost their minds?

Stepping back, I have to say the arrogance of the modelmakers is breathtaking. There have been, in every century, scientists who say they know it all. Since climate may be a chaotic system-no one is sure-these predictions are inherently doubtful, to be polite. But more to the point, even if the models get the science spot-on, they can never get the sociology. To predict anything about the world a hundred years from now is simply absurd.

Look: If I was selling stock in a company that I told you would be profitable in 2100, would you buy it? Or would you think the idea was so crazy that it must be a scam?

Let's think back to people in 1900 in, say, New York. If they worried about people in 2000, what would they worry about? Probably: Where would people get enough horses? And what would they do about all the horseshit? Horse pollution was bad in 1900, think how much worse it would be a century later, with so many more people riding horses?

But of course, within a few years, nobody rode horses except for sport. And in 2000, France was getting 80% its power from an energy source that was unknown in 1900. Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Japan were getting more than 30% from this source, unknown in 1900. Remember, people in 1900 didn't know what an atom was. They didn't know its structure. They also didn't know what a radio was, or an airport, or a movie, or a television, or a computer, or a cell phone, or a jet, an antibiotic, a rocket, a satellite, an MRI, ICU, IUD, IBM, IRA, ERA, EEG, EPA, IRS, DOD, PCP, HTML, internet. interferon, instant replay, remote sensing, remote control, speed dialing, gene therapy, gene splicing, genes, spot welding, heat-seeking, bipolar, prozac, leotards, lap dancing, email, tape recorder, CDs, airbags, plastic explosive, plastic, robots, cars, liposuction, transduction, superconduction, dish antennas, step aerobics, smoothies, twelve-step, ultrasound, nylon, rayon, teflon, fiber optics, carpal tunnel, laser surgery, laparoscopy, corneal transplant, kidney transplant, AIDS… None of this would have meant anything to a person in the year 1900. They wouldn't know what you are talking about.

Now. You tell me you can predict the world of 2100. Tell me it's even worth thinking about. Our models just carry the present into the future. They're bound to be wrong. Everybody who gives a moment's thought knows it.

I remind you that in the lifetime of most scientists now living, we have already had an example of dire predictions set aside by new technology. I refer to the green revolution. In 1960, Paul Ehrlich said, "The battle to feed humanity is over. In the 1970s the world will undergo famines-hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death." Ten years later, he predicted four billion people would die during the 1980s, including 65 million Americans. The mass starvation that was predicted never occurred, and it now seems it isn't ever going to happen. Nor is the population explosion going to reach the numbers predicted even ten years ago. In 1990, climate modelers anticipated a world population of 11 billion by 2100. Today, some people think the correct number will be 7 billion and falling. But nobody knows for sure.

But it is impossible to ignore how closely the history of global warming fits on the previous template for nuclear winter. Just as the earliest studies of nuclear winter stated that the uncertainties were so great that probabilites could never be known, so, too the first pronouncements on global warming argued strong limits on what could be determined with certainty about climate change. The 1995 IPCC draft report said, "Any claims of positive detection of significant climate change are likely to remain controversial until uncertainties in the total natural variability of the climate system are reduced." It also said, "No study to date has positively attributed all or part of observed climate changes to anthropogenic causes." Those statements were removed, and in their place appeared: "The balance of evidence suggests a discernable human influence on climate."

What is clear, however, is that on this issue, science and policy have become inextricably mixed to the point where it will be difficult, if not impossible, to separate them out. It is possible for an outside observer to ask serious questions about the conduct of investigations into global warming, such as whether we are taking appropriate steps to improve the quality of our observational data records, whether we are systematically obtaining the information that will clarify existing uncertainties, whether we have any organized disinterested mechanism to direct research in this contentious area.

The answer to all these questions is no. We don't.

In trying to think about how these questions can be resolved, it occurs to me that in the progression from SETI to nuclear winter to second hand smoke to global warming, we have one clear message, and that is that we can expect more and more problems of public policy dealing with technical issues in the future-problems of ever greater seriousness, where people care passionately on all sides.

And at the moment we have no mechanism to get good answers. So I will propose one.

Just as we have established a tradition of double-blinded research to determine drug efficacy, we must institute double-blinded research in other policy areas as well. Certainly the increased use of computer models, such as GCMs, cries out for the separation of those who make the models from those who verify them. The fact is that the present structure of science is entrepeneurial, with individual investigative teams vying for funding from organizations which all too often have a clear stake in the outcome of the research-or appear to, which may be just as bad. This is not healthy for science.

Sooner or later, we must form an independent research institute in this country. It must be funded by industry, by government, and by private philanthropy, both individuals and trusts. The money must be pooled, so that investigators do not know who is paying them. The institute must fund more than one team to do research in a particular area, and the verification of results will be a foregone requirement: teams will know their results will be checked by other groups. In many cases, those who decide how to gather the data will not gather it, and those who gather the data will not analyze it. If we were to address the land temperature records with such rigor, we would be well on our way to an understanding of exactly how much faith we can place in global warming, and therefore what seriousness we must address this.

I believe that as we come to the end of this litany, some of you may be saying, well what is the big deal, really. So we made a few mistakes. So a few scientists have overstated their cases and have egg on their faces. So what.

Well, I'll tell you.

In recent years, much has been said about the post modernist claims about science to the effect that science is just another form of raw power, tricked out in special claims for truth-seeking and objectivity that really have no basis in fact. Science, we are told, is no better than any other undertaking. These ideas anger many scientists, and they anger me. But recent events have made me wonder if they are correct. We can take as an example the scientific reception accorded a Danish statistician, Bjorn Lomborg, who wrote a book called The Skeptical Environmentalist.

The scientific community responded in a way that can only be described as disgraceful. In professional literature, it was complained he had no standing because he was not an earth scientist. His publisher, Cambridge University Press, was attacked with cries that the editor should be fired, and that all right-thinking scientists should shun the press. The past president of the AAAS wondered aloud how Cambridge could have ever "published a book that so clearly could never have passed peer review." )But of course the manuscript did pass peer review by three earth scientists on both sides of the Atlantic, and all recommended publication.) But what are scientists doing attacking a press? Is this the new McCarthyism-coming from scientists?

Worst of all was the behavior of the Scientific American, which seemed intent on proving the post-modernist point that it was all about power, not facts. The Scientific American attacked Lomborg for eleven pages, yet only came up with nine factual errors despite their assertion that the book was "rife with careless mistakes." It was a poor display featuring vicious ad hominem attacks, including comparing him to a Holocust denier. The issue was captioned: "Science defends itself against the Skeptical Environmentalist." Really. Science has to defend itself? Is this what we have come to?

When Lomborg asked for space to rebut his critics, he was given only a page and a half. When he said it wasn't enough, he put the critics' essays on his web page and answered them in detail. Scientific American threatened copyright infringement and made him take the pages down.

Further attacks since have made it clear what is going on. Lomborg is charged with heresy. That's why none of his critics needs to substantiate their attacks in any detail. That's why the facts don't matter. That's why they can attack him in the most vicious personal terms. He's a heretic.

Of course, any scientist can be charged as Galileo was charged. I just never thought I'd see the Scientific American in the role of mother church.

Is this what science has become? I hope not. But it is what it will become, unless there is a concerted effort by leading scientists to aggressively separate science from policy. The late Philip Handler, former president of the National Academy of Sciences, said that "Scientists best serve public policy by living within the ethics of science, not those of politics. If the scientific community will not unfrock the charlatans, the public will not discern the difference-science and the nation will suffer." Personally, I don't worry about the nation. But I do worry about science.

Thank you very much.

As we are all becoming more conscious of our environment, the demand for green web hosting has considerably been on the increase. This increase in the demand for green hosting is as a result of the awareness campaign being carried on different platforms on the use of electricity and its impact on the environment. The government’s directives on the adoption of green technologies are also a considerable factor towards the increase in green hosting demands.

It is a fact that every hosting company and ISP in America should be powered by a third of the yearly ancient Seabrook nuclear reactor production. But this is not happening now. Undisclosed sources has it that out of the over 1.4 trillion KWH of electricity generated in USA within the first 8 moths in 2009, hosting companies consumed close to 4% of that generated power. Hosting companies are reported to collectively spend an average of three billion dollar yearly on electricity. This amount of money can be used to boost other services on the internet if there is a way to curtail the electricity expense. The Department of energy reported recently, that 9.79 cents is the average cost per kilowatt in the whole of USA. These points are pointing towards the economic importance of finding ways to reduces electricity consumption of the hosting companies through green hosting.

Without downplaying the role of green hosting companies, it is good to note that there are some various differing reports on some eco conscious websites. Some of them are of the opinion that there is no significant effect the consumption or usage of bandwidth has on the ecosystem. This may be a slight disservice to not just the consumer but also to the environmental-conscious parties who are campaigning for safer environment. Their claims are supported by numerous data that can easily be accessible.

Moving from a green-compliant industry to an eco-friendly net energy producer is an achievable feat for the various preachers of green hosting. Their goal of becoming carbon-neutral business enterprises is worth emulating too. Green hosting is a very welcome idea.

Looking at the nature of the hosting business, the companies must be in operation 24 hours daily, every week and of course every month of the entire year. Can this be guaranteed by solely green solution? The hosting companies must be connected to the National grid to make up the periods of insufficient green power output. Some hosting companies are currently selling the excess power they generate back to the power company but this is possible because they had taken responsible actions towards generating more electricity that they consume.

So many people also frown at the fact that some hosting companies use green hosting as mere marketing points. This should not be, because green hosting is such that if well implemented with visible results, it will help other businesses that consume electricity in large scale to emulate them. It is therefore, advised that green hosting and their strides so far should be reported in such a manner that is verifiably responsible.

You may give it a worthy trial when you want to upgrade the content of your website. But try to find out those green hosting companies that are true to their words. A very sound Google search will be of help to you in this case. Remember that the efforts put into this research are worth the time and every penny spent on it.

If you work in a Small and Mid Size business (SME) there is a big chance that you are sending, receiving emails and sharing contacts/tasks/calendars on hosted exchange or Webmail powered email hosting solution. But what are the differences between hosted exchange and Webmail and what email hosting solution is the best option for your business?

Most SMEs usually don’t have the time, a large IT budget or technical staff to implement and maintain an entire in-house email server infrastructure. Other factors such as costs are usually the main reasons why hosted exchange or Webmail email hosting is becoming more and more popular. By using hosted exchange or Webmail from an email hosting provider your business don’t need to physical-in-house-on-site email servers.

Hosted Exchange is sometimes also called exchange hosting and is usually running on a Microsoft Exchange backend server. Using an email hosting provider you get peace of mind that your email system is always secure, backed up and up and running. Using a premier email hosting provider services also comes with high reliability and performance plus administration and 24/7/365 support. To summarise the main difference between hosted exchange and Webmail email hosting is that 1. Webmail is a budget version of email hosting and 2. with Webmail you use a web browser to send, receive and review emails, i.e. you will need internet access to utilise Webmail.

Hosted Exchange

Hosted exchange is based on Microsoft’s latest exchange server with Microsoft outlook as your client. With Outlook you can do more than send and receive email, you can share calendars, folders and contacts. Outlook is available for desktop, browser and mobile access so you are always connected, whether you are in the office, on the road or working at home. You always connect to the same exchange server; therefore your inbox always stays synched in near-real time, no matter which Outlook client you are using.

In a hosted exchange environment, the hosting provider owns and is responsible for the data centre, network, devices, operating system and application infrastructure components. In short, the hosting provider is responsible for providing a stable operating environment for every application used. Your own IT organisation manages the applications and maintains full control over the applications infrastructure and business process.

In contrast with in-house-on-site email servers you need to provide maintenance and have anti-virus subscription and security update upgrades. You’ll need to purchase a new server approximately every 5 years and you will have slow access from outside of the office. You also need to invest in server hardware, server software licensing, exchange enterprise software and Blackberry server software. Finally you’ll need to hire a consultant to install software and perform maintenance/upgrades.

Having a hosted exchange solution mean you don’t have to pay through the nose for expensive in-house servers, software licenses, employing IT staff to install and maintain the infrastructure, or being responsible for a 24/7 infrastructure.

Webmail

Webmail gives you “anywhere, anytime”, emails, calendars, contacts and task lists. It’s intended to be as powerful as a desktop client, such as Outlook. The only limitation is that you need is a web browser and an internet connection. You can access email from Outlook, BlackBerry, Webmail, or any other email client or wireless device with absolutely no maintenance on your end.

Webmail email hosting is a budget email hosting solution, but nonetheless it delivers great functionality for small businesses. A Webmail service takes away complexities of installing and maintaining an in-house email solution and at the same time offers the latest anti-spam, anti-virus and security technologies.

Webmail is an email hosting solution that is perfect for businesses that have somewhat limited in-house budgets for IT expenses, limited IT resources to support an email environment and businesses that need the latest spam and virus protection.

Hosted exchange or Webmail – What’s best for you?

What are the main differences between hosted exchange and Webmail? In summary hosted exchange is a more sophisticated solution with more shared options and is more widely deployed, on the other hand Webmail is gaining market share easily accessible and is of course a cheaper solution than hosted exchange.

Below is a brief explanation of what the differences are – in terms of ability to share contacts, tasks and calendar – between hosted exchange and Webmail email hosting.

Share contacts:

Shared contacts are usually available with the hosted exchange option. Other users can be granted access to edit your contacts. Usually there is no ability for shared contacts with the Webmail option. Other users cannot have access to edit your contacts.

Share tasks

You can usually share tasks among users with hosted exchange. You have the ability to assign a task to other users. You can select the users you want to invite and automatically see the best times to meet. Collaboration with tasks among users is usually not available with the Webmail option. You cannot assign a task to someone else and you have to manually find everyone’s schedule before you agree to set up a meeting.

Share calendar

Exchange usually allows you to delegate read/write capabilities with the hosted exchange option, i.e. you can have an assistant create events for you. Events can have different statuses and colours on your calendar (i.e. out of office, on holiday, business etc.). No delegation capabilities can be given to other users with the Webmail option, so your assistant cannot create events for you. Only read access can be given. Categories of events are not available (personal, out of office, on holiday etc.) and all calendar events are displayed in the same colour.

What is a good host for a book review website?
I, along with one other, am hosting a book review website called The Book Junkie. We are currently using freewebs.com, but the HTML filter isn't very good. It only gets us 20 free pages, also. Using templates is not an option. Our site is www.thebookjunkie.webs.com . As you can see, it is very untidy. If you have any suggestions for host sites, please let me know! Also, if you would like to become part of our staff, or just write a book review or two, please feel free to email me at xxlilsh0rttiixx@yahoo.com Don't worry. We have about 20 or 30 more reviews that aren't put on that site. They were put on a petpage from neopets.com Thanks a bunch! **It must have an HTML filter!!

Looking for a reliable web hosting solution is an intimidating task. No matter for what reason you’re looking for it, either your need is for a commercial site or personal one. A lot of things require special attention in choosing a first-class hosting solution. Appropriate amount of disk space, bandwidth, technical support and hosting expenses are few of it.

Most web hosts, if not all, offers different payment plans which give you cheaper rate than if you were to pay on a monthly basis. Because price is always a factor you need to be careful going for a specific host. You need to select a host that fulfills your website’s traffic requirement. To estimate this, you need to know how much graphics your site will include & the number of pages, more graphics and pages means higher storage plus greater bandwidth. Don’t think that expensive hosts are always a better choice, research and then decide. Many web hosting plans offer disk space and bandwidth in abundance and they don’t cost much.

The host should not only be fast but it should also guarantee its uptime. In fact, it should at least offer minimum uptime of 99%. Nothing else discourages your visitors than inaccessible web site which may decrease your traffic. If your host doesn’t offer 99% uptime, it isn’t worth considering.

Once you have estimated your web hosting requirement, then its time to consider certain web hosting features. Does your web host offer you a traffic reporting feature? You’ll need this info to analyze your website for more targeted advertising. A decent web host needs to be popular; you need to know about their service record? It should offer unbeatable customer support. You can determine the popularity of a host by seeing their Alexa Traffic ranking and/or look for their reviews.

Below I enlist some of the features that many host offer nowadays:

· Control Panel
It’s an interface where you can access and manage your site, allowing you to setup and update your site. cPanel is the most popular control panel, so look for it.

· Email, POP3, Mail Forwarding
You would for sure like to have your email address at your own domain i.e. You@yourdomain.com. Does your host offer this feature? Are you allowed to set an email address that would automatically respond the sender? Can it forwarded to your current email address?

· Databases and PHP/ASP Support
If you are planning to include a database on your site you will need this. Major sites are often generated dynamically using server side scripting languages.

Summary

There are many other features that may interest you. There are many terrific affordable web hosting companies in the Internet. You can find the Top 10 USA Web Hosting Providers at www.webhostingyes.com with cheap hosting packages.

Are you confused, perplexed and undecided? These are the major “symptoms” for those who have already designed their website but don’t know which web hosting provider to choose from. Clearly, with all the attractive packages offered by the hosting company, no one would blame you for having such headaches if you were not an IT-savvy person. Even if you are an IT-savvy person, I’m sure you might face with some difficulties choosing the ideal hosting provider since there are so many different types of prices in set by different web hosting provider. Well, talking about IDEAL, do you believe there is IDEAL web hosting provider for everyone? Of course, there is no such thing as ideal web hosting provider for everyone. Please bear in mind that different people see things differently. One may say company A is very good and reliable, and then the next person may think that company B is better. So, in terms of viewing an ideal provider, it differs from person to person. Therefore, when a question such as “list the top 5 web hosting company” is asked, everyone will have different answer.

Briefly, web hosting provider will host your website and make sure it can be accessed by everyone 24 hours a day. So, it is vital to select a reliable one to make sure your website is always accessible particularly if your website is an important means of communication for you to reach your end users. Hence, I have decided to write some tips for those who need to choose a web hosting provider. There are as follows:

Types of Web Hosting Provider and What Do You Expect from Them

Freebies

Never expect too much from freebies. If you need a professional looking website to get running on the Internet, I don’t think you should rely on freebies. They may not be able to provide you the features and support you need.

Paid Ones

I would personally opt for this if I were to set up an online business or start any professional looking website. As the term implies, paid hosting provider will definitely serve you better and you can select those who offer the features that you want.

The Criteria to Select Web Hosting Provider

Support

Yes, support is undoubtedly the most important thing. Not only support that you need, but make sure it’s a Professional Technical support and it’s advisable to choose that company that provides 24×7x365 support. Who knows if your website suddenly has problem in the middle of the night. Without round the clock support, who will be able to help you? A simple advice here, before you choose a web hosting provider, try emailing them and see how fast is their response. Whether it’s a technical question or question to their customer service department, it doesn’t matter. But, since you are interested in their plans, I would suggest you email their customer service department first. If they have prompt reply, give them a tick in your criteria list. So, remember this essential point.

Price

when it comes to money, people will think twice. Yup, so do me. People will compare the price from one company to another. In order to make a wise decision, make sure the pricing you choose is unbeatable and reasonable. However, do take note that cheaper provider does not necessarily mean better service. I’m sure you will have doubt when you see that Company A offers so cheap plan compared to Company B. Have no fear. Just do some other surveys or join forums to ask for other people’s opinion on the particular company’s review. Of course, until the end of the day, you will also have to decide and take some risks to trust the company that you will choose. Hence, the next criterion is also equally important when you take your risk to trust a company.

Money Back Guarantee

make sure you find a web hosting company who has money back guarantee policy. The most common one is 30-days money back guarantee. Only a handful will offer 60-days money back guarantee. So, with this guarantee, you do not have to worry when you start venturing into the cyber world and letting the whole world view your proudly developed website.

Platforms and Applications Available

In a more technical sense, it means the different type of platforms available. Nowadays, web hosting company will offer mostly Linux or Windows platform in their server. So, if your website is based on .ASP technology, no doubt you will have to go for Windows platform. Check also on the features offered for you, whether the features is supported by your website back-end technology or not. If you are unsure, don’t be hesitating to ask them. That’s why as mentioned earlier, support is very important. You can email them to ask or even call them if they are your local hosting providers.

Scalability, Reliability and Security

How good a web hosting provider is also depends on how scalable; reliable in terms of backbone connection and website uptime; and secured in terms of virus and SPAM filtering. Remember that all these criteria are needed to make sure your website is running well. It will be great if the provider allows simple and easy upgrade for any hosting plans. Some also provide customization for you. So, this depends on your decision ultimately. Please remember to choose provider that allows you to easily add bandwidth, web space or email accounts as your traffic grows.

Do also check on the reliability of the web hosting company on their uptime guarantee as well as asking them on where their server located is and their backbone connection. You can always email to ask them this. And I suppose a reliable web hosting company will provide this content on their website for you to see. So, in case if they do provide live chat, ask them instantly. A proven uptime guarantee will at least ensure that your website can be safely viewed by your intended users from anywhere and at anytime of the day.

Security is what everyone needs. Therefore, it’s best to choose provider that has stated clearly on their policy that they have SPAM and virus filtering feature already installed. As there is one saying that goes like this, “prevention is better than cure”. So, be prepared before you are attacked by virus or malicious email attachments.

All in all, I hope this guide can more or less help you in selecting a web hosting company. At least it gives you a rough idea of what to look for.

When scanning through web hosting reviews, there are a few terms that you will be seeing that you may want to know the meaning of to better understand what the review is all about.
“Price”
Obviously most people would want to get the best value for their money, and most web hosting reviews will take this aspect into consideration. Most reviews will tell you how much you will be paying per month, and what you will be paying for. There are also sites which will give discounts when you sign up for more than a month’s hosting service.
“Domain Name Registration”
When you see web hosting reviews of web hosting companies, they often give good marks to those that offer domain name registration. A domain name is your identification inside the Internet, or if you have a website, it will be your website address (www.yourcompany.com), this can be done separately, like registering a name for a trademark or reserving a company name. Separate registration of a domain name can cost up to $20 a year without a web site host, and on the other side of the spectrum, there are webhosters that will allow an unlimited number of domains to be registered by a client.
“Disk Space”
A web hosting company in essence will be leasing some space on its servers to the website owner. “Disk space” is the size in bytes or the amount of data a client can upload (and thus be made available to the public) to the webhost’s servers because of the number of bytes that they will allow you to use. Good ratings are given by web hosting reviews for sites that will let their clients avail of the most disk space for their websites.
“Bandwidth”
This is the speed in which someone can browse through the website, upload to or download from the internet. Again, the higher the bandwidth capabilities, the better the webhost company will show in web hosting reviews.
“Email Accounts”
Anyone who is online will have or know what an email address is. What these web hosting services offer are specific email accounts that have special addresses like yourname@yourcompany.com.
“Secure Servers”
Another important aspect that a web hosting service should take into consideration, this not only takes care of the integrity of the site and the contents, it is also responsible for guarding over the transactions within the website. If a website is created for commercial reasons, it is inevitable that at the very least money will be involved, as well as information that can be used for fraud.
“Unlimited”
This is a term applicable within reason, which is saying that there is no such thing as unlimited email, or disk space, or domain names, it’s just almost impossible for any user or website client to be able to use all the allotted slots or space for email, domain names and data that is available from the web host. This may be due to the fact that there are only so many sensible words or names that one can use for domain names.

Over the last two hundred and fifty years, since industrialization began, the delicate balance in the earth’s systems and atmosphere has been disturbed by pollution. One form of pollution is the release of the basket of greenhouse gases that are associated with the consumption of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.

Green web hosting is just one more earth-friendly thing you can do. Green web hosting is not only an environmentally friendly option, but it is also an affordable one. If you’re not familiar with it, green web hosting is a form of web hosting that focuses on socially conscious and ecologically friendly methods.

Green web hosting is the process when web hosts use renewable/alternative energy, recycle waste, plant trees, purchase Renewable Energy Certificates and employ other such measures to power their datacenters with which their customers can feel good about their role in saving the planet.

Chosing Green Web Hosting

Don’t be impatient when it comes to choosing a green web host. When you are already in the process of choosing your green web hosting provider, you should never purchase from the first company that you will communicate with. It is a good practice to compare services and features to find which one will meet your needs. There are many factors to consider when choosing your web hosting provider, especially now that similar services are offered to customers in multiple formats.

In order to keep the web thriving, providers must use tons of electricity, contributing to the environmental concerns plaguing the earth today. Green web hosting providers are popping up more frequently as the eco-movement becomes widespread and, yes, trendy. Several hosting providers have set out to at least balance their part of what hosting does to negatively impact the environment. They have completely offset the amount of greenhouse gas production by their current electricity providers with certified wind and solar-power providers in the United States,Canada and the United Kingdom.

At the moment it can be very difficult ascertaining a good hosting provider from another as the Internet is now full of biased reviews, rubbish testimonials and paid blog posts. With the advent of unlimited hosting packages, it has made the task even harder to find a reputable provider. And some unlimited hosting providers do have an honorable reputation; companies such as HostPapa are providing a good service with raving real testimonials. The company seems to be run by a good management team as this seems to be a good indicator of how steady and reliable the hosting provider is.

Eco-friendly green web hosting is a recent trend among web hosting providers. One good thing about the green web hosting is that, many entrepreneurs are willing to spend more money for the well ness of planet earth. One way of spreading the word about Green web hosting is to join an affiliate program of a Green Hosting company or to become a Green Hosting Reseller.

Greengeeksreviews is offering a $25 discount for new customers who signs up for a hosting plan. To claim the discount, simply copy and paste the Green Geeks coupon (available on the Green Geeks review website) when ordering.

Why consider GreenGeeks as your hosting service provider.

With the phenomenal growth of the Internet, there is an immediate need for more and more servers. To meet the growing demand of these servers, more data centers are required. Unfortunately, these data centers tend to consume a lot of power that is oil based.

There are two main reasons why oil based power should be reduced or eliminated. The first reason is that such power is finite. In other words, the energy source is not renewable. Once it’s used up, it’s gone forever. The second reason is that huge volumes of CO2 is being emitted into the environment when converting oil to usable energy. CO2 is harmful to the environment because it leads to global warming. And global warming can lead to undesirable climate changes.

Therefore, it makes sense to look into green energy sources to support the growth of the Internet.

Green geeks hosting is 300% green hosting

Every web hosting company must pull power from the grid in order to support its servers. Greengeeks does the same as well, but they purchase wind energy credits for the power that they used from the grid.

In fact, for every 1 unit of energy that they use from the grid, they purchase 3 times the amount of energy in Wind energy credits. In other words, Greengeek’s customers can proudly announce that their website is powered by servers that are 300% green. By doing so, Greekgeeks doesn’t just cover their own carbon footprints. They also help to reverse the damage that is being done to the environment.

Green geeks hosting is EPA green power partner

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) green power partnership is a voluntary program that helps organizations reduce transaction costs when purchasing green energy. They provide companies with useful advice, tools and resources to help them go green. For example, they help to translate marketing messages into more tangible formats. A lay person may not understand fully the volume of CO2 being reduced. The volume may be communicated in terms of CO2 being emitted by passenger cars. Marketing messages become more meaningful this way.

Being an EPA green power partner is an indication of Green Geek’s strong commitment to protecting the environment.

Green Geek’s unlimited packages.

Green Geek provides cPanel hosting. cPanel is currently the most popular control panel in the web hosting industry. With its eco plan, a customer gets an unlimited account. An unlimited account allows the customer to host unlimited domains on the same account. The customer also enjoys unlimited web space and bandwidth. There is also no limit on the number of databases that can be utilized.

For those who are technically challenged, two additional template based website builders are readily available.

The Fantastico script library is included in cPanel control panel. Using this library, customers can install all kinds of useful scripts such as blogs, mailing lists, forums, guest books, etc. with a few simple clicks.

Be a responsible entrepreneur and grow your business with green hosting. Save $25 instantly when you purchase hosting from Green Geeks with a coupon.
Watch the video related to green hosting review
